The inspiration for House of Solace came from the desire to create a sophisticated and functional living space within a sanctioned budget. The client, a singleton, wanted a home that exuded elegance and charm. The color palette of white, black, greys, electric blue, and pop yellow was carefully chosen to bring an urbane touch to the design.
One of the unique features of this studio apartment is its location in an Art Deco building from the British Rule era. With over 10ft high ceilings and symmetrical proportions, the space offered a sense of luxury and grandeur. Anushka Contractor converted a one-bedroom space into a large studio apartment, focusing on low maintenance and high functionality.
The design realization of House of Solace involved a combination of teak wood and polyurethane paint finish for the furniture. Concrete, terrazzo, and metal were used for the decorative lights, adding a touch of industrial chic to the space. Wooden look tiles were laid on the floor, arranged in a herringbone pattern that extended up the main wall of the living room, creating a seamless flow.
The studio apartment is divided into distinct areas, each with its own unique features. The living room is filled with natural light, thanks to a large window and a tiny balconette. An artwork commissioned to a young artist adorns the living room wall, adding a splash of yellow and blue to the otherwise somber colors. A TV wall unit with storage and shelves for curios connects the living area to the open kitchen, creating a cohesive and functional space.
The kitchenette is compact and fuss-free, with an island housing the cooking console, an overhead chimney, and storage drawers. The island is clad with cut sections of plywood, finished in a matte polish to enhance its layers. A black finish door frame and blue paneled shelves inside double up as a bar, adding a touch of sophistication.
The bedroom features a large black-framed glass double door entrance, leading to a cozy and intimate space. A wardrobe provides ample storage, while a slender panel on one side serves as shelving. A mirror feature, designed specifically for this home, adds depth and visual interest. The headboard of the queen-sized bed is matte black and upholstered for extra comfort.
The bathroom follows a monochromatic color scheme, with black fittings, powder blue walls, and cabinets in a mellow shade of lemon. The tiles play with the contrasting colors, creating a visually striking space.
